Η απάντηση του Helmut Scholz σχετικά με την ACTA

Thank you very much for your consistent effort and attention to ACTA.

As a member of GUE/NGL, I consider ACTA as a wrong way to deal with challenges and problems regarding Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Nowadays, it is undoubtedly important to prevent counterfeiting and to preserve the interests of artists and the creative sector in a digital environment. However, ACTA does not provide right answers, and in my view was never intended to do so. From the beginning of the negotiations on ACTA, large corporations from film, music and software industry were very involved in it and were striving to establish an agreement designed to enforce their commercial interests.

Although a feasible agreement or regulation should be established within the international framework, a right approach should take benefits and interest of citizens, artists and of all partner countries into consideration.

There should be completely new and transparent deliberations in the multilateral framework of the World Intellectual Property Organization. Within this new approach, the problems of counterfeiting goods, of counterfeiting medicine and of ensuring a deserved income for the creative sector in the digital environment need to be addressed separately.

Also in this new debate, we need to have important partners such as China, India or Brazil on board from the beginning and take into consideration the different existing legislative approaches to ensuring and implementing intellectual property rights, consumer protection and the right to access affordable medicine.

Again, I would like to insist that rejecting ACTA does not imply an anti-intellectual property action. Rejecting ACTA in INTA represents a victory for democracy.

Without a doubt, I will reject ACTA again in the plenary session in the upcoming week. Hopefully, we will witness another participatory victory together.

Kind regards,

Helmut Scholz, MEP
